Our team visited Redemption International for the Blind in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, on Monday, May 31, 2021, to better understand the community of persons living with disabilities and to explore potential collaborations for future inclusive projects. We were warmly welcomed by the President of the organization, Barrister Sunday Ezeoke, and his team, who then carried us through the challenges faced by visually impaired persons and how the organization worked hard to support them. Particularly students who are visually impaired.
Executive Director of the organization, Mr. Ayuba Isa Waziri, shared with us the organization’s mission, which is to gain respect for the visually impaired persons in Plateau State and across Nigeria. He opened our eyes to the understanding that blindness can affect anyone, regardless of age, status, or background. He also raised concerns over how visually impaired individuals often feel rejected by society, leading some to street begging for survival. He also lamented that the lack of special educational materials for visually impaired students has shattered their hopes for quality education.
The organization expressed readiness to collaborate with Africare Peace Initiative to improve the lives of visually impaired individuals.
