In commemoration of 2026 International Women\u2019s Day, Maria Foundation for Women Development, in collaboration with her partners, Africare Peace Initiative, Hope Builders for Physically Challenged Foundation, Grassroot People and Gender Development Center, Lupus Remedies Foundation, and Stop Female Genital Mutilation Foundation, successfully carried out a community health outreach at Better Life Market, in Makoko, Lagos State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outreach was guided by the International Women\u2019s Day, themed: \u201cGive to Gain,\u201d with focus on \u201cEmpowering Women, Empowering Health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our goal was simple, to reach women, especially the vulnerable, with the right health information and access to basic medical checks that can improve the quality of their lives. A total of 55 women between the ages of 18 and 65 participated in the program. Many of them were market women who rarely have the time or resources to prioritize their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the outreach, free blood pressure checks were carried out, helping to identify women who may be at risk of hypertension. Those with high readings were referred to nearby federal medical centres within the community for further evaluation and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the screenings, certified nurses and pharmacists provided practical health education, helping the women to better understand common health challenges and how to manage them. Hygiene kits and informational materials were also distributed to support healthier daily practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the key strengths of the program was the involvement of the community itself. The Iyaloja of the market and youth leaders were actively engaged, ensuring participation, and continuity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This outreach was fully funded by the partner organizations, reflecting a shared commitment to improving the well-being of women at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Representatives from all partner organizations were present, including Princess Chioma Amanze: E.D – Maria Foundation for Women Development, Rachel Nuhu Birma: E.D – Africare Peace Initiative, Dr. Christiana Akinrimade: E.D – Hope Builders for Physically Challenged Foundation, Vivian Ifeoma Emesowum: E.D – Grassroot People and Gender Development Center, Sanusi Fauzat: E.D – Lupus Remedies Foundation, and Emmanuella Chisom Aboyomi: E.D – Stop Female Genital Mutilation Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is just one step in a much bigger journey. There are still many women in underserved communities who need access to basic health information, screenings, and support. Partner with us and support our initiatives to help us reach more women and improve their healthcare outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
