On October 29th, we were invited to speak at an event organized by SOS Children’s Village in Zawan Community School, Bukuru, Plateau State. This was in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated annually on October 11th. This year’s theme, “Digital Generation, Our Generation,” highlighted the opportunities and challenges of the
digital era for young girls. Africare Peace Initiative’s Executive Director, Rachel Nuhu Birma took the students in a discussion forum, where she spoke to them on the advantages and risks of the digital generation, particularly the use of social media. She emphasized the importance of technology and how it enhances education and career prospects, while also stressing the potential dangers it can pose if not properly used. She shared practical examples, showcasing how some individuals have successfully leveraged the digital platforms to improve their lives.
During the interactive session, some of the girls asked questions, including the appropriate age to access social media and start a relationship.
This was a beautiful opportunity to contribute meaningfully in the lives of these young minds.
